IPv6 by 2010

2008 May 27 – 8:49 pm

Apparently the EU want us in the EU to all be using IPv6 by 2010. I’m not quite sure thats going to happen or even needs to happen really. Don’t get me wrong I’m all for it but I just don’t see devices (read routers etc) being anywere near ready for this in time. Also there’s quite a learning curve for admins to get into to understand this properly and as there’s no real benifit to the general user or business is anyone going to be bothered to invest time in getting ready for this ?

For those that don’t quite understand it IPv4 is what we all use to surf the internet and to connect to our office servers. IPv4 is pretty old and has a limit that means the world will run out of space using it shortly. Shortly however has been for the last few years and is still a long way off. IPv6 has a vast ammount of extra room but needs quite a bit of extra setup and potentialy new hardware and software to understand it.

Auto USB Drive Mounting

2008 May 22 – 11:30 am

For some time now we’ve had an issue at some customers sites that their servers don’t auto assign a drive letter to a USB drive when added. This is a bit of a pain as some customers use USB HDs for backups, so each time they change them we need to connect in and mount them with the right drive letter.
There is a fix :)

Windows Server 2003 Enterprise and DataCenter Edition do not assign drive letters to new fixed drives (USB and Firewire disks are usually ‘fixed’). This is up to the administrator because otherwise SAN (Storage Area Network) drives might be mounted accidentally.
This feature is called AutoMount and can be enabled by means of the DiskPart tool: Open a commandprompt, enter diskpart, on the DiskPart prompt enter automount to see the current state or automount enable to enable it.

Hyper-V RC1

2008 May 21 – 2:35 pm

Looks like Microsoft have just released Hyper-V RC1. It can be downloaded from KB950049. We’ve been running RC0 on a few sites for a while without incident and really like the functions it offers. No crashes or lockups yet, lets hope that RC1 builds nicely on that.

i-mate Ultimate 9502

2008 May 21 – 1:54 pm

I’m a heavy user of the HTC TyTN II so have been watching i-mate for some time with their ultimate range. Nice to see that some of the products are actually out and nice to see people reviewing them.

A great review of the Ultimate 9502 can be found here at PocketNow.

We’re still holding out for the iPhone mk II though.

Website and Blog Progress

2008 May 21 – 10:17 am

Well after 8 months of Glo Networks being around it’s time for us to sort our customer communication and marketing out. So yesterday we started finishing the web site and started this Blog. The website was designed by Sam Hemmings (beware the browser growing) and coded by ourselves.

We’ll continue to update the website and then in the near future get a professional to actually write the content properly. But for now we’ll do nicely I hope.
