Does your website “fit”?

2009 December 17 – 9:24 am

Being systems and network geeks we’re not really great at web design, but some of us here have always been aware of the common web design rules – such as not exceeding certain sizes, and users only scrolling through 95% of the page maximum, but we’ve never seen much hard evidence.

Google have just released a new 20% project, called BrowserSize, that overlays browser size data on top of a chosen URL. Just be aware, it currently doesn’t take into account fluid designs right now.

Core Parking

2009 December 15 – 10:50 am

Parked CPU (Earth)Core Parking is a new feature in Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 designed to cut energy usage without impacting on system performance.

Made for systems with multi-core processors, it is able to reduce energy consumption by moving all processing to just a few of the cores (or even just one) if they are able to handle the load, and putting the other cores into a ‘Parked’ or inactive state. While in this parked state the cores use less energy but are still ready to resume normal use pretty much instantly!

The energy savings when dealing with systems with 2-4 cores will not be too dramatic, however with more cores (Server 2008 supports up to 256 cores!) this could soon add up.

Google Chrome for Mac

2009 December 8 – 5:24 pm

Chrome logoGoogle have finally released Chrome for Mac OSX. It is now out for OSX 10.5 or above and for intel Mac’s only.

You can download it here it is only Beta at the moment so use it with caution but if the windows version is anything to go buy its quite stable.

It doesn’t look like some features are quite ready yet, for example there is no sign of bookmark syncing that is in the latest beta of Google Chrome on Windows.
